Sandy Cohen, a special education teacher who retired from Fairfax County Public Schools, is one of 13 artists whose work is featured in the 2014 Creativity and Parkinson’s Calendar, published by the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

Cohen’s photograph, “Tulip: Flame of Hope,” appears on the cover of the nationally distributed calendar, which helps to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease. More than 1,500 individuals voted for the artwork gracing the calendar.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nearly 1 million people in the United States and for which there is no cure. Cohen, of Alexandria, was diagnosed in 2003 at age 31. Only 4 percent of people living with Parkinson’s are diagnosed before the age of 50.

Although Cohen has enjoyed creative pursuits since her youth, she says her passion for photography was reignited after her diagnosis.

“Photography gives me freedom from thinking about my symptoms and allows me to remember ‘the real me’,” she said. “To have people from across the nation inspired by my photograph and sharing the experience of Parkinson’s together through art makes me so proud.”

Her photograph depicts a fiery orange and yellow tulip, the official symbol of Parkinson’s.

“We are proud to showcase Ms. Cohen’s work in the calendar and in our online gallery,” said Robin Elliott, foundation president. “Her photograph of a symbolic tulip shines on this year’s cover and will not only inspire but serve as a source of hope.”

Greenspring hires new leadership

Jean Landreville has been named the new executive director, and Pamela Haman the new associate executive director, at Greenspring, an Erickson Living retirement community in Springfield.

Landreville joined Erickson Living in 2005 and has 18 years of experience in the senior housing and health care industries. She most recently served as associate executive director at Fox Run, an Erickson Living community in Novi, Mich. Prior to that, she was the associate executive director at Riderwood, Erickson Living’s largest community, in Silver Spring, Md.

“Jean’s proven leadership, expertise in aging services, as well as diverse health care experience will help Erickson Living further serve the senior marketplace in Northern Virginia,” said Kerry Jones, Erickson Living’s vice president of Regional Operations.

Landreville, a licensed nursing home administrator, received a bachelor’s degree in general dietetics from Madonna College in Livonia, Mich. She also received a master’s degree in management of aging services from the Erickson School at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Haman comes to the community with nearly 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Since 2003, she has served as the administrator or executive director at health care centers in Ohio and Massachusetts. She joins Greenspring from Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation — Highgate, where she served as area executive director for two skilled nursing facilities in Massachusetts.

Haman received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from The Ohio State University and a Master of Business Administration from Tiffin University, also in Ohio. Haman is also a licensed nursing home administrator.

Greenspring, set on a scenic 108-acre campus, is home to nearly 2,000 residents and employs a staff of 1,000.

New faces at Dewberry

Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm with offices nationwide, has announced two new hires and a promotion at its Fairfax headquarters.

April Diaz, the new senior interior designer, has more than 10 years of interior design experience, with a portfolio that includes corporate, retail, aviation, education, and local, state and federal government projects.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design from Florida International University. She is a member of the National Council of Interior Design Qualification, Commercial Real Estate Women, and the U.S. Green Building Council. In 2011, Diaz won the Woman of Achievement: Interior Design Award from the D.C. Chapter of Women in Construction.

Elizabeth Hensley, the architectural practice’s new national marketing director, has more than 25 years of marketing experience, developing and leading initiatives for a spectrum of practices in the architecture, engineering and construction fields.

Prior to joining Dewberry, Hensley was the Southeast regional marketing manager at AECOM. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Mark Scott has been promoted to principal. Scott has more than 36 years of experience as an architect and planner. As the director of architecture, he is responsible for the coordination and design development for the Fairfax architects group. He currently serves as the facility designer and manager on phase two of the Dulles Metrorail project.

Scott has a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. He is a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, the Washington Building Congress and the Design-Build Institute of America.

Westfields Marriott expands team

Two food professionals with more than 40 years of combined experience have joined the team at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles: Executive chef Todd Schofield and director of catering sales Sharon Meyers.

Schofield’s love for cooking led him to culinary studies at Newbury College in Massachusetts. His association with Marriott Hotels began in 1985 at Boston Marriott Copley Place. He recently held senior food and beverage positions at Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, and at Fairview Park Marriott in Falls Church. He lives in South Riding.

A 1987 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, Meyers comes to Westfields Marriott from The National Conference Center in Leesburg, where she has held a similar position since 2007. She previously worked at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg and The Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner. Meyers lives in Leesburg.

“We’re proud to welcome Todd Schofield and Sharon Meyers to our team,” said general manager Scott McClinton.

Westfields Marriott recently completed extensive renovations to Wellington’s, its Chantilly restaurant, and redesigned its conference dining room. Twenty new guest rooms have been added, and the fitness center has been updated with modern cardio equipment and free weights.

Noodles & Company now serving pasta lovers

Noodles & Company, serving classic noodle and pasta dishes from around the world, opened a new restaurant Dec. 9 at 14241 Centreville Square in Centreville.

Noodles & Company has more than 340 restaurants across the country. Its menu lists some 25 fresh, customizable dishes. Favorites include the sweet and spicy Japanese pan noodles, zesty pesto cavatappi and the popular Wisconsin mac and cheese.

The 2,590-square-foot Centreville restaurant, which seats 73 guests inside and 22 on the outdoor patio, is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays to Wednesdays, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursdays to Saturdays. For holiday hours, call 703-815-2605.
