Reston townhouse fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire at approximately 4:20 a.m. Nov. 26 in the Reston area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located in the 1600 block of Apricot Court.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the attic and roof of the two-story home upon arrival. A neighbor in the adjacent townhouse smelled smoke, called 911, and alerted the occupants by pounding on the front door. Both occupants escaped unharmed, although smoke alarms did not alert them. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. The fire did extend to the roof of the adjacent townhouse causing moderate damage. Both occupants have been displaced; there were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $150,000. According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A faulty recessed light on the top floor of the townhome caused the fire.

Beacon Hill bank robbery

Fairfax County Police are seeking a suspect in a bank robbery in Beacon Hill.

At approximately 2 p.m. Nov. 26, a man entered the Capital One Bank located at 6790 Richmond Highway, displayed a handgun and demanded money from a bank employee. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash; there were no injuries.

The suspect was described as white, in his 20s, under 6 feet tall, and weighing about 180 pounds. He was wearing a knit hat, a dark jacket with a hood, and dark pants with a stripe down the middle.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of this bank robber. The FBI and the Fairfax County Police Department are investigating the robbery and request that anyone with information call the FBI at 202-278-2000, or Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.

Man charged with assaulting police officer

A Fairfax County police officer was injured after responding to a domestic call in the 4300 block of Majestic Lane in Fairfax at 6:20 p.m. Nov. 29. Joshua D. Hammond, 30, was charged with malicious wounding of a police officer, three counts of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and trespassing.

Suspects sought in Reston assault

Fairfax County police are seeking suspects in an assault that took place in the 11900 block of Freedom Drive in Reston last week. A 20-year-old man was walking on a path at 10:55 p.m. Nov. 28 when five men approached him. One suspect assaulted the victim and another took his property. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury. The suspects were described as black males in their teens.
