Fairfax County citizens will vote on a $250 million public school bond referendum in the Nov. 5 election.
The funding on the ballot includes $42 million for construction of two new elementary schools, one in the Bailey’s Crossroads area and one in the Richmond Highway area. If approved, the bond would also provide for expansions at Westbriar Elementary School and South Lakes High School, to prevent overcrowding.
The School Board also included $10 million for the acquisition of land for one new high school in the southwest part of the county when it proposed the bond referendum in May.
The largest share of the bond funding would go toward school renovations. More than $271 million would be spread across 22 schools in the system. This amount can equal more than the total bond amount up for vote due to unspent proceeds from previous bond issues, which have reduced costs for this bond by $109 million.
The two big-ticket items are $67 million for the renovation of Langley High School and $35 million for the renovation of Thoreau Middle School in Vienna.
Other projects that would be covered under the bond funding include technology upgrades, roof replacements, and security enhancements.
Three student journalists from Fairfax County high schools are finalists for National Scholastic Press Association awards.
Dakota James Craig of Robinson Secondary School is one of 10 finalists for Picture of the Year in the “Sports Action” category, for her photo capturing two wrestlers clashing in a match for the school yearbook.
Tara Gupta of the Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology is up for Cartoon of the Year for an editorial cartoon published in the student newspaper tjToday.
Rounding out the finalists, Katelyn Rebelo of Centreville High School is a finalist for Design of the Year for an infographic she created for her school yearbook.
The students’ entries — and their competition — can be seen online at studentpress.org/nspa. The winners will be announced at the NSPA convention on Nov. 16 in Boston.
