The buzzword is “fresh.” Outdoor markets — landscapes of freshly picked fruits and vegetables, freshly baked pies and breads, freshly cut flowers, freshly prepared meats and cheeses, and more — are opening all over the county this month.

Farmers truck produce from their fields, eggs and dairy products from their barns, and homemade treats from their kitchens several days each week to tantalize the taste buds of local residents.

Master gardeners offer plant clinics at some markets: McCutcheon/Mount Vernon, Oak Marr, Wakefield, Annandale, Herndon, McLean, Kingstowne, Burke and Reston. In addition to answering questions about plants, Master gardeners can identify pests and diagnose diseases from plant and insect samples.

Farmers markets with a Fairfax County website are supervised by the Fairfax County Park Authority through the Community Horticulture office, based at Green Spring Gardens. For more on those markets, call 703-642-0128, TTY 703-803-3354.
