In the Fairfax Times’ April 26-28 Letters to the Editor, “Vote on gun measures sheds light on political system,” Dr. Klara Bilgin has stated the Liberal Democratic position in a clear and concise manner so that no mistake can be made in the interpretation of their agenda. To summarize her first point, moderate Democrats that have the audacity to represent the will of their constituents are obstructionists. These rogue Democrats therefore should not have the support of the party if they are not going to follow the party agenda without question. The party agenda is paramount to the will of the people. Is that what our Constitution says? I know that Liberals disdain the Constitution; after all, it always gets in their way of “fundamental transformation for the good of the people.” Dr. Bilgin is incorrect about the Tea Party. The Tea Party was not formed by Republicans to “clean its ranks.” The Tea Party is a grass roots movement by conservatives to make their voice heard within the Republican Party. It was formed to counter the established Republican leadership, not to “purify” it.

As to Dr. Bilgin’s second point concerning Republicans and the gun lobby, it is obvious that once again Liberal ideology overshadows reality. The facts are that the guns used in all the recent “national tragedies” were purchased legally and the purchasers all underwent background checks. In the case of Newtown, the gun used was stolen. If criminals obeyed the law, they wouldn’t be criminals. There are already laws to prevent criminals from having guns. Making more laws or depriving honest gun ownership by responsible citizens will not take one gun from one criminal. The last time I checked, cocaine and heroine use and possession are illegal in all 50 states by Federal law, yet you can go to any street corner of any major city and buy all you want. Even though every ounce of these illegal items are produced outside of our country and must be smuggled in, they are abundant and affordable. Billions of dollars are spent each year to prevent trafficking of these illegal drugs to no avail. Do you think similar laws will stop criminals from possessing and using guns? This is why most Republicans and a few honest Democrats stood up against the Liberal agenda; it’s just not based on fact. We all know that facts to Liberals are like holy water to vampires. It is apparent that Dr. Bilgin has no clue of what is required to purchase a gun other than through a private sale, which amounts to an extremely small number of total sales. Every sale of a firearm in Virginia by a licensed dealer, whether at a gun show or anywhere else, requires a background check before the sale can be completed. Concealed carry permits require extensive classroom training, registration with the State Police and fingerprinting, loose standards indeed. As for private gun sales, even though they are a small percentage of all gun sales, the majority of those sales are between people with first hand knowledge of each other or through a third party introduction. Isn’t it better to have first hand knowledge of an individual, including his current mental state, than to rely on a distant database?

Dr. Bilgin’s third point about the gun lobby ‘king’ in America, the NRA, is a continuation of her disregard for anything that counters the Liberal agenda. The fact that responsible Americans belong to an organization that can effectively defend their Second Amendment rights (oh that pesky Constitution) seems to be troublesome to her. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s millions of dollars on anti-gun TV ads didn’t seem to bother her at all. Why didn’t Dr. Bilgin mention that the current Attorney General (Eric “fast and furious” Holder) only prosecutes about 10 percent of the federal gun violations of the countries largest cities. Wouldn’t that make more sense than punishing responsible gun owners? Why is it that Liberals seem to think that the answer to every problem is more government, and Federal government is best. Reagan was right, “Government is not the answer, it’s the problem.” The blind ideology of Dr. Bilgin and her political brethren are preventing the country from finding real world, workable solutions.
