The Friendly High School boys swim team capped off its first undefeated regular season in at least five years. The Patriots girls finished 9-2 and both have positioned themselves to do well at Saturday’s Prince George’s County Championships. Friendly’s boys finished eighth in the county last year and the girls placed 13th. Friendly’s boys, coach Erin Reynolds said, hope to win the Class 3A/2A/1A South Region title as well.

Ice hockey

DeMatha Catholic won its Wounded Warrior game against Mount Saint Joseph’s, 5-3, in front of a packed house at the Gardens Ice House on Friday. It was the first of two consecutive games and the Stags fell in the second meeting, 3-1, on Monday. The Stags are 14-13-3 (1-1-2 MAPHL) as of Monday.

Neither Bowie or Eleanor Roosevelt’s teams qualified for postseason play. Bowie has four points in conference play with a 2-8 record. Roosevelt has one point at 0-8-1.

Track and field

Riverdale Baptist shot putter Rashad Manning’s first throw at the Private & Independent School Invitational went, as he recalled, 52 feet and 10 1/2 inches.

The mark broke a meet record, but if it had stood as his best toss Saturday, that would have been his worst performance of the season. Throws like that can get Manning mad, he admits.

But he had two aides Saturday that helped him remain calm. One was teammate Klarance Simpson, who made small talk, and the other was his mother, Tracy Manning-Knapp.

“She told me to relax, smile,” Manning said. “I just did that.”

His next throw went 57-04 to set a new personal best.

Wrestling

For the second straight year, coach Adam Forschner has led Parkdale to the 4A/3A South Regional Duals tournament. Unlike last year, when Parkdale played host to the event, the Panthers (12-2) entered the tournament as the fourth seed and wrestled North Point on Wednesday in a match that occurred too late to included in this edition of The Gazette.

Also making the postseason was Surrattsville, the fourth seed in the 2A/1A South.

Meanwhile, DeMatha Catholic failed to repeat as the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champion. The Stags placed third in the WCAC tournament behind Good Our Lady of Good Counsel and Paul VI.
