Downer commits to Albany

Oakton senior quarterback Kyle Downer made his college commitment to Albany last Monday. He made the decision after also considering offers from Maine, St. Francis and VMI.

Downer rose rapidly on the recruiting scene on the heels of an improbable playoff run in which he led the Cougars to a Northern Region Division 6 championship and a state semifinal.

After playing much of his high school career at the tight end position, Downer switched to the quarterback position and threw for 2,869 yards while collecting 37 touchdowns in his first season as a starter at the position. He also played at the starting safety spot on defense throughout the playoffs. Downer earned first-team all-region honors for his efforts.

Downer is the second member of his team to commit to an FCS school this winter. Senior offensive lineman Chris Durant chose William and Mary in December, a decision that will team him up with West Springfield standout running back Jonathan Dunn this fall.
