Both new and familiar faces will play key roles at Herndon-based Northwest Federal Credit Union as 2013 gets under way.
Taking the reins at Northwest Federal is new president/CEO Chris McDonald. He succeeds Gerrianne “Winky” Burks, who retired after a 41-year career at the credit union.
McDonald has 28 years of credit union experience; he most recently served as CEO of Andrews Federal Credit Union in Suitland, Md. He first began working with Northwest Federal this past fall.
Also new to the executive team is Jesse Boyer, senior vice president and division executive for REALTORS Federal Credit Union, a division of Northwest Federal. Boyer served as executive vice president/chief operating officer/chief information officer of REALTORS prior to its merger into Northwest Federal this past summer. In his new position, Boyer is responsible for supervising the day-to-day functions, long-term strategy and everything in between for the new division.
In 2011, Boyer was recognized as one of Credit Union Executive Society’s’ “Rising 100” up-and-coming credit union executives.
A familiar face is Northwest Federal Board Member Martin Edwards Jr., who has been nominated for reappointment to the board. Edwards was chairman of the board for REALTORS Federal Credit Union when it merged with Northwest Federal.
Meanwhile, Navy Federal Credit Union has appointed law enforcement veteran Robert “Bob” Carlisle as its vice president of security. The former Town of Vienna police chief will be responsible for helping oversee security operations that ensure the safety of the credit union’s 4 million members and 10,000 employees worldwide.
Based at Navy Federal’s headquarters in Vienna, Carlisle, a Herndon resident, brings 35 years of service in law enforcement to Navy Federal. Before his 12-year stint as Vienna’s police chief, he served as an assistant chief of police in Falls Church. His career began at the Fairfax County Police Department, where after 21 years of service, he retired as a bureau commander. Carlisle received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from George Mason University.
Finally, John Marshall Bank has announced the addition of Lynn Gulick of Lorton and Heather Skigen of Vienna to its team of banking leaders. Both Gulick, senior vice president for business development, and Skigen, senior vice president/senior credit officer, will be based in John Marshall Bank’s Reston office.
Gulick brings more than 30 years of experience in the banking industry. She was a senior vice president for 11 years at Cardinal Bank, where she specialized in new business relationships and online cash management services.
Skigen brings more than 20 years of experience in the banking industry. Prior to joining John Marshall Bank, she was a senior vice president at Essex Bank. Skigen graduated from the University of Texas with a bachelor of business administration degree and majors in finance and international business.
Exelis Inc. of McLean has appointed Pamela Drew as president of its Information Systems business area, based in Herndon. Drew replaces Mike Wilson, who is retiring from the company.
In her new role, Drew will be responsible for leading the effort to apply the engineering and science talent Exelis has in system development, networking, radio frequency communications and information systems. Her team will provide capabilities for missions that include defense and intelligence systems, air traffic management, space and earth science and homeland defense.
Drew received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she also completed her doctorate and master’s degree in computer science.
Chantilly companies announce promotions, new hires
NJVC, an information technology solutions provider headquartered in Chantilly, has announced two management-level promotions: John Herweh to senior vice president of human resources and Adriel Cardona to director of security.
As a member of the NJVC leadership team, Herweh is responsible for directing and developing company training, employee relations, talent acquisition and management, compensation and benefits and security. Herweh joined NJVC in 2011 as vice president of human resources.
Cardona oversees all NJVC security-related issues for both the company and its customers. He develops and administers security briefings for senior staff member and government officials, investigates security-related incidents, assesses and implements methods to reduce security incidents, develops and evaluates security policies and oversees all security staff. Earlier, Cardona was NJVC chief security officer.
The SI Organization Inc. in Chantilly has announced Barry Barlow will join the company as chief technology officer. Barlow recently retired from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency as director for Online GEOINT Services.
Barlow has more than 36 years of experience in the aerospace and defense sector. He previously served as director of NGA’s Acquisition Directorate, where he was responsible for the development and deployment of the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence worldwide. He also has served as NGA’s chief architect, NGA’s chief engineer and program manager for the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence.

Chantilly-based SMITH Engineering has promoted Anthony Venafro to director of Engineering.
Venafro entered the land development industry as a designer with Loiederman Soltesz Associates Inc. in 2005. He joined SMITH Engineering at its inception in October 2008 as a project manager. Venafro will oversee the Engineering Department, while continuing to oversee project management.
SMITH Engineering is a civil engineering firm specializing in land development throughout Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Services include planning, surveying, civil engineering and land development consulting.
New York Life has named Jim Adkins of Vienna as its 2012 Council Vice President, an honor bestowed annually on the producer with the entire company’s second highest achievements. This is the second time Adkins, a leader in the company’s field force of 12,250 licensed advisers and agents, has been named Council Vice President.

A new Italian deli and market specializing in authentic hoagies opens Feb. 4 at 2905 District Ave. in Fairfax. Philadelphia natives Casey Patten and David Mazza are opening their first Taylor Gourmet in the innovative Mosaic District.
To celebrate the opening of their new store, owners Patten and Mazza will offer free 6-inch hoagies that day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.
