Two people and 10 pets were killed in a Falls Church house fire early Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.

Fairfax County firefighters responded to the fire shortly before 3:30 a.m. in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County. The single family home was located in the 3100 block of Manor Road and was a total loss, according to fire officials. Firefighters said the ranch-style home was fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival.

“Firefighters conducted an exterior fire attack due to the overwhelming volume of fire surrounding all four sides of the home,” fire and rescue spokesman Dan Schmidt said.

Schmidt said power lines on the right side of the home also came down while firefighters were battling the blaze. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes, and firefighters then found two bodies burned beyond recognition. “We can’t even tell you their gender,” Schmidt said.

In addition to the two bodies, 10 pets — two dogs and eight cats — also perished in the fire, Schmidt said.

“It is very tragic,” he said. “Only a white brick masonry fireplace remains of the home.”

Schmidt said both fire and police investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, and the names of the deceased will be withheld until next of kin has been notified. A medical examiner will determine the cause of death. “Police will investigate to determine whether there was any foul play, notify the next of kin and provide us with the identities once they are determined,” Schmidt said.
