State police continue to search for answers in the case of a missing Frederick County businessman whose body was found in the trunk of his car Monday afternoon in Montgomery County.

John P. Ryan, 37, of Frederick was found about 2:30 p.m. in the trunk of his 2007 Lexus in a parking lot in Derwood, near Gaithersburg.

Ryan worked in the property-maintenance business, traveling throughout the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., region for his work, according to Maryland State Police.

The vehicle was in a parking lot used by several businesses in the 15000 block of Somerville Drive by an agent from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security assigned to the Frederick County Narcotics Task Force, police said.

The car was taken to the state police barrack in Rockville, where investigators obtained a warrant to search the vehicle and discovered Ryan’s body.

They also found about a pound of suspected marijuana and some cash in the trunk, state police spokesman Greg Shipley said Tuesday.

With the case under investigation, Shipley said he couldn’t speculate on any role the contents found in the trunk may have played in Ryan’s death, or whether he may have been involved in the use or sale of drugs.

Police were still investigating how Ryan’s car and body ended up in Montgomery County, with no immediate connection to the scene where the car was found, Shipley said.

Ryan’s wife had reported him missing to the Frederick Police Department on Nov. 29, telling officers she last saw him on Nov. 27. She said he had left the house before she woke up on Nov. 28.

Ryan’s body had suffered unspecified trauma, details of which were not released because of the ongoing investigation, according to a state police news release.

The body was scheduled to be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Frederick police had asked Maryland State Police to assist in the search for Ryan. The narcotics task force, which includes members of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, state police, FBI and homeland security, also aided in the search.

Montgomery County police, who also were involved in the search, are continuing to help with the investigation.

Anyone with information about Ryan’s disappearance or death may contact state police Cpl. Jonathan Martin or Sgt. Richard Bachtell at 301-644-4151. Callers can remain anonymous.
