The towns of Herndon and Vienna are celebrating the prettiest and most-sustainable residential gardens, yards and landscapes in their communities.

Winners of Herndon’s "Yard of the Month" contest for July are the Metcalfe home on Monroe Street and the Castillo-Robey garden on Herndon Mill Court. Members of the Town of Herndon's Cultivating Community Initiative, a volunteer group dedicated to beautification and community spirit, judge the yards. The next award is in October; deadline to submit nomination(s) is Sept. 15.

In Vienna, the McCoy family of Aponi Road Southeast and the Simeck family of Courthouse Road Southwest received the Beauty Award. The Lau family of Marshall Road Southwest. and the Holmes family of Nutley Street Northwest received the Sustainability Award for their vegetable gardens.

Vienna's Community Enhancement Commission recognizes residents and businesses for beautification and sustainability projects. The town council recognized the families at its July 2 meeting.

Beauty Award recipients are determined by the appearance of the property's landscape or hardscape, and its contribution to the overall beauty of the community. Sustainability Awards are given to businesses and homeowners who have made significant improvements to the sustainability of their home, business or garden.
