Man killed in Springfield crash
A 27-year-old Burke man died when the car he was driving was hit by a falling tree.
Police responded to the report of a crash around 11 p.m. June 29 in the area of Old Keene Mill Road and Bauer Drive in West Springfield.
The investigation determined Khiet Nguyen was driving his 1998 Mercury west on Old Keene Mill Road, passing Bauer Drive when a tree fell directly on his car. Nguyen was pronounced dead at the scene.
Woman killed by falling tree
A 90-year-old woman died when a tree fell on her home as she was lying in bed. Another occupant of the home called 911 but was unable to reach the victim.
Police, fire and rescue units responded around 11 p.m. June 29 to the home in the 8100 block of Carr Street.
Body of Alexandria man found following storm
The Maryland Natural Resources Police recovered the body of a missing boater, identified as 26-year-old Angel Giovani Ayala Cerros or Alexandria, on July 1 in Chesapeake Beach, Md.
Officials said the fatality was the result of the heavy winds and storms that came through the area on June 29. The storm caused the boat Cerros was on to overturn and capsize.
Authorities said four other people were on the vessel at the time of the accident and were rescued .
Cerros’ body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsy. The Maryland Natural Resources Police Special Operations Division continues the investigation into this fatal boating accident.
Man accused of firing weapon during dispute
A Reston man has been accused of shooting a gun inside a vehicle during a domestic dispute that took place between 2 and 3 a.m. Tuesday in Leesburg.
Loudoun County Sheriffs spokeswoman Liz Mills said Keyvan Rafiee, 28, was arguing with his girlfriend in a moving vehicle. He is accused of brandishing a firearm, threatening her, and firing the weapon out of the car. The woman was able to get the firearm away from him and threw it out of the moving vehicle. She sustained minor injuries.
Mills said Rafiee also is accused of punching the woman’s small dog, which was riding in the car.
A resident in the area heard the shot and called to report a possible car accident. Deputies responded around 2:50 a.m. to the scene at Va. 7 and Leeland Orchard Road.
Rafiee also is charged with abduction, brandishing a firearm, assault with a firearm, simple assault and cruelty to animals. He is being detained without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Elderly woman missing from Dulles Airport
Authorities are searching for an elderly woman who went missing Wednesday at Washington Dulles International Airport.
The Virginia State Police issued an alert around 1:50 a.m. that day on behalf of the Metro Washington Airport Police Department in search of 70-year-old Huilan Song.
Song was last seen at the airport wearing a cream colored long sleeve blouse, black pants and black shoes.
She’s described as an Asian woman, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with brown eyes and gray hair.
Authorities said Song suffers from a mental impairment and her disappearance poses an “credible threat” to her health and safety. Song does not speak English and does not have any identification on her person.

Officers cleared in shootings
Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond F. Morrogh has informed Col. David M. Rohrer, chief of police, that he found no basis for criminal liability on the part of the police officers who discharged their weapons in two separate incidents. No charges will be filed against the involved officers — Pfc. J. Kevin Clarke and Pfc. Stephen Copp.
Clarke, who has been with the department for 12 years, currently is assigned to the K-9 section. He was involved in a shooting in the Springfield area on May 21.
Copp, who has been with the department for five years, is assigned to the Mount Vernon District Station. He was involved in a shooting on May 28. In that case, Stephen P. Collier, 61, was treated for his wounds and arrested. He is charged with destruction of property and assault on a law enforcement officer.
Dog stabbed in Mount Vernon
Animal Control officers were called to pick up a dog on June 29 in the 3500 block of Rolling Hills Avenue. Cane, a 15-month-old white Pit Bull, was found with injuries to the left side of his neck. A veterinarian determined the injuries were consistent with a stab wound.
Officers now searching for the person who stabbed Cane.
Unable to pay costs, the owner turned Cane over to the shelter. Costs will be defrayed by the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.
