Quince Orchard High School linebacker Marcus Newby verbally committed to the University of Nebraska Monday morning, according to Cougars coach Dave Mencarini. Newby confirmed his decision in a text message to The Gazette.

In an interview last month, Newby said he had a few local ties to the Cornhuskers. John Papuchis, a 1996 Quince Orchard graduate, is the program’s defensive coordinator and 2009 graduate Jason Ankrah is expected to start at defensive end this fall.

“That definitely is a factor,” Newby said at the time. “It would be nice to go somewhere with connections.”

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound middle linebacker was a highly regarded four-star (out of five) recruit by the nation’s three largest recruiting services (Scout.com, Rivals.com and 247sports.com). Last fall, he recorded 81 tackles (16 for loss) and three sacks en route to earning first team All-Gazette honors. Quince Orchard advanced to the Class 4A state championship game.

Newby also considered Penn State, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Rutgers and Maryland.
