Fifth-graders at Deer Crossing Elementary School in New Market are growing up.
More than 90 students celebrated their fifth-grade graduation during a ceremony Friday.
The ceremony, which has been a part of the school program for about eight years, featured a slideshow of the students’ baby pictures and pictures from the school year, as well as a reading of poems some students wrote in honor of staff members.
Administration members and teachers also gave the children advice and words of encouragement to the students in the presence of the families.
Last week, the students visited New Market Middle School, as a way to become acquainted with their new school and, according to Erin Knott, a fifth-grade classroom teacher at Deer Crossing, make for a better transition for the children.
“I think that [visit] calmed some nerves,” she said. “[I wish them] good luck and I hope they enjoy those years in middle school. We are very proud of our fifth graders.”
