The beginning of May has special meaning for food lovers and the nutritionally aware. It marks the beginning of farmers market season, a time when local growers and purveyors bring their wares each week to designated market sites throughout the county. The area has more than 20 weekly farmers markets, not counting scattered seasonal farm stands. Some have dozens of vendors, others only a few, but all are local.

The following is the 2012 farmers market schedule for Fairfax County and the city of Falls Church.

Tuesdays:Van Dyke Park (3730 Old Lee Highway), 8 a.m. to noon.

The Plaza at Fairfax Corner, 11901 Grand Commons Drive, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.


Mount Vernon Farmers Market, 2501 Sherwood Hall Lane, Alexandria, 8 a.m. to noon

Oak Marr, 3200 Jermantown Road, 8 a.m. to noon

Wakefield, 8100 Braddock Road, Annandale, 2 to 6 p.m.,

Vienna-Oakton, Oak Marr Park, 3200 Germantown Road, 8 a.m. to noon.

Reston, 11890 Sunrise Valley Drive 3:30 to 7 p.m.

Thursday:Herndon, 777 Lynn St., 8 a.m. to noon.

Annandale, 6621 Columbia Pike, 8 a.m. to noon.

Frying Pan Farm: 2709 West Ox Road, in front of Frying Pan Country Store, 3:30 p.m.-7 p.m.


McLean Farmers Market, 1659 Chain Bridge Road, 8 a.m. to noon.

Kingstowne, Kingstowne Town Center, 8 a.m. to noon.

Centreville Farm Market, 5875 Trinity Center, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.


Burke, 5671 Roberts Parkway, 8 a.m. to noon.
