Open letter to Herndon voters:

On Tuesday at the Herndon Community Center, you will pick a new team to guide our town for the next two years. The leader of that team, our next mayor, will set the agenda and represent our community at the local, county and state level.

We feel the best qualified candidate is our Vice Mayor Lisa Merkel. We need to elect a true leader with a positive vision for our town.

Merkel realizes a sound working relationship at the county level will greatly benefit Herndon’s citizens. She has demonstrated her leadership ability and reached out to our elected officials at the county level to re-establish the town of Herndon as a respected partner with Fairfax County. Those efforts have resulted in Merkel receiving the endorsement of Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust and Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova.

As former mayor and town council members, we have more than 47 years of collective experience in leading Herndon. We know what it takes to be an effective leader, and have watched with pride as Merkel has worked tirelessly to improve and promote our town. Merkel is the right candidate at the right time to move Herndon forward.

Please join us in our commitment to sound leadership, with a positive vision for Herndon, by making Merkel our next mayor.

Michael O’Reilly, mayor of Herndon (2004-06), town council (2000-04)

Darryl Smith, vice mayor (2004-06)
