The next Shakespeare could be enrolled at Urbana Middle School.
Seventh-grade students enrolled in a theater arts class last year taught by Jonathan Kurtz wrote a play that recently was published in a national magazine.
The play, “Li’l Red in the Hood,” is included in the May 2012 issue of “Plays, The Drama Magazine for Young People.”
Student writers include Hamza Alhaeri, Gabe Aponte-Serra, Leah Chewning, Megan Cicerone, Lissette Donayre, Mindy Dottellis, Josh Ford, Allie Frontin, Lindsey Jordan, Alex Ketzenberger, Amy Matthews, Chris McKenna, Sydney Messier, Maggie Neff, Ashley Petersen, Cameron Samuels, Bailey Sartori, Ava Sheidhauer, Megan Sponaugle, Anna Stamato, Miranda Stokes, Harrison Trowbridge, Camila Vaca-Pereira and Will Webb.
The students’ play told the traditional story of the Big Bag Wolf as a courtroom drama. In the play, the wolf is found not guilty.
“Their story was innovative, creative and perfectly executed for a state presentation,” said Plays Magazine editor Elizabeth Preston.
The magazine is published seven times each school year, with each issue containing eight to 10 one-act plays.
